It is a good motor and isn't fussy about how you gear it or the voltage you use. I think it's suited for for 5s for decent power and good reliability, I'd buy it again. I usually gear it 13/46 for racing, but might try 14/46. I have geared it 16/46 for bashing without temp issues. It's got a lot of power on 6s, bit much for a slippery off road track.
You might have seen this before, but this is my e-maxx geared 12.5:1 (yours geared 16/48 would 12.9:1) before I swapped the brushless stuff over to the truggy. I should give you an idea of the performance.

Racing is definitely a lot of fun, I probably wouldn't have gotten into rc if it wasn't for racing. Racers here are pretty lucky I guess, there's 4 permanent off road tracks that I've raced at that are within 1 hours drive from me, plus one that gets setup at a park for one of the interclubs. We also go to at track in Bunbury (2 hours away) sometimes for an interclub, and we also went to a two day interclub race in Geraldton (4 1/2 hours drive). That was a good track, it's was made for nitro 1/8ths.
If every one that's been racing in the monster truck class in the last couple of months showed up on the same day there would be about 8 cars (all brushless), but usually there is 4-6 cars.
