I did a mod on a MM once and acidentally shorted one leg of thew fets (had a few move and didn't catch it :(, didn't kill the ESC before I found the problem but acted just like you are describing (cogging & excessive heat). Propably just the overvoltage thing but if draining the pack a bit does not help... If I could only draw what I see in my head, then afford to build it, and finaly get to play with it...
