For The Love Of God.... Someone Help Me..... -
04.20.2008, 11:34 AM
I give up.
I ordered an MGM 16018 controller to use with my 5S Revo from Mike.
The first one was defective out of the box. Mike sent me a new one and was very helpful.
The second one worked fine except out of the blue, it would nose dive. No rhyme, no reason, just nose dive at will... different speeds, no way of duplicating it.
That was a few months ago.
Mike didn't have any so I 've had to wait a few months for another to come in.
I received it yesterday and installed it.
I reset the radio/controller end points and then programmed the controller using the software.
The good news is it doesn't nose dive at will. That's gone.
The bad news is if you pull the trigger at anymore than half throttle and then hit the brakes, the car speeds up first and THEN starts to come to a stop.
So far in less than 15 minutes of running, I've caused 400 dollars in damage breaking the ground effects on my wife's car, ruined a brand new wheelie bar, revo wing and rear bumper.
I changed all my settings and changed back from "cutoff" to "low voltage" and now it coasts between forward to reverse.
I've increased and decreased the neutral zone percentages, I have zero dead spot on throttle on the radio.
I give up.
Mike has been more than helpful throughout this but I think it's just time to get rid of the controller. Anyone have any suggestions before I sink it at the bottom of the creek?
Mark

Put it on ebay, and Make a note that says "linc, do not buy this" in your description.
Seems like quite a few people have issues with mgm controllers. I have not used one myself, and am wating on the MMM to come out. All this negative info makes me wary of the mgm products...

Wow. I really wish I could help but have no experience with MGM ESCs. Sounds like you have demons in your truck. All I can say is "don't give up"!

After spending almost 1500 bucks converting this over (that includes 600 in batteries) I'm just gonna put the whole thing on ebay.
I'll just get the new erevo...lol.

You know this 'feature' in the MGM controller where the actual throttle position determines the speed the motor is running at?
so if you go from WOT to 5 percent, the car brakes as hard as it can to make the motor turn at 5 percent.. it might be an explanation..

Do you have the "frewheel" option switched on? I remember that people had issues getting this to work.

Actually, if it was working that way, it would actually work correctly. Unfortunately, there is a "freewheel" in between throttle and brake.

Yes, should I turn it off?

Maybe try it off? I can say that if you are able to program it correctly, just try changing every option one at a time. It may take a while, but might help? Also, set your radio settings to zero, or centered on everything to do with the throttle channel, center all trims. And then set the esc up completely again. Sometimes that helps. I hate to see you sell the entire truck just cause of this!

Good idea, I'll try that.... (just as soon as I pull the trans and find out what broke)
Can't get it running right but can get it running long enough to break the trans.

Radio -

Hey what radio are you using with this controller? Maybe there is a communication issue between the two? Like linc says we know it is frustrating but you should keep trying. Maybe one of the guys who have more experience with the MGM can either help to get it set up, or maybe even set it up for you and send it back. Then you will know for sure if something is wrong with the MGM or something else. For the money anything is worth a try, and when it is finally setup and running all of the bad will be lost. If there is one characteristic that matters most in our hobby it is patients. and maybe a good shot of Tiquila once in a while. Good luck with your issues.

Check all of your connections and solder joints. If you are using the computer software, reset to defaults and reprogram to your radio. You will want the freewheeling set to ON.

A few guys have reported some similar problems that you have been having in this thread: http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/show...gm+low+voltage
If you read through it you can find settings that they used to try to correct the issues. Topas and lutach talk about the acceleration while braking issue on page 8. MGM has also released some firmware updates that you could try out. I think the latest out is 3.22

There is a mess-up in the manual, that freewheel option isn't free-wheel as you might know it.. I had the same weird programming thing with my 24160..

Jerry,
I'm using a Spektrum 3.0 radio. It's the same one I've been using. Each time I use a different (same brand, same model, just different controller), I get different problems.

The only option I haven't tried is changing it back to race mode and install the low voltage shut off back in it again.
That's what I've been doing until I received the new controller. Maybe I need to go back to doing that AGAIN...

Thanks King, the new controller is 3.22.... new updates, new problems.

So what are you saying? Use or not use freewheel? I've got it "on" now.
Thanks all...
