has anyone out there built a nitro t max into a crawler. do you have any helpful advice on gear reduction. i am aware that electric is most ideal but nitro is in my veins.

Is it a 3.3 or the older style? With the older style you can go to a 72t spur and the smallest clutchbell, 14t?

If you want more reduction you could buy a set of hybrid bulks and use 1/8 truggy gearsets, 43/10 ratio. Kind of expensive, but not much else you can do unless you fabricate a tranny with a lower ratio.

The 3.3 tranny uses much smaller spurs, than the old maxx. If you put a large spur on that it would offer a lower ratio for better crawling. Not sure if there is enough adjustment on the motor to fit though.

Either way you will most likely have to fab some parts...

thanks i own the 2.5 but i have a friends 3.3 to experiment with. fab not a prob, i m a welder and fabricator. do you know of a 14t in 32pitch? if so it would allow room for bigger spur gear. ever heard of a steel spur bigger than 72?

Sorry, was thinking of mod1 clutch bells, the smallest 32p that I could find was a 17t. I had a look and the 72t seems to be the largest that I can find.

I also made mention in your other post "bring it" that you cold adapt a new emaxx tranny to the truck. You would have to trim the chassis, and fab mech brakes. But having a selectable high and low gear would be worth it to me. Sounds like a fun project...

Also, flm make an adapter to mount a new emaxx tranny on the old chassis, which may work with your tmaxx.

i was thinking about a planetary spur gear or hubs. or using idler gears between spur and clutch. a reduction at the hubs would reduce stress on the drivetrain. but 4 times the work. i cant cut gears though.

Interesting, I like planetary gearboxes. Just built a tamiya cr-01 and it has the planetart tranny, it works great. I would probably scarp the tmaxx tranny in favor of the emaxx tranny and make a mount for the mech brake. Seems like the easiest way out! But I do like your hub reduction idea...

Traxxas makes a 16T 32P clutchbell. That I know for sure. I don't recall anyone making a 14T though...

Looking at the numbers, if you put a tmaxx 3.3 tranny in it, and run 72/16 primary gearing, you will have a 42:1 reduction, which should be fine for crawling. You can back off the 2 speed adjustment so that it will not shift into 2nd, and most likely have around 15mph max speed.

has anyone ever tried an assosiated bell with a traxxas 2.5 motor? the bearings must be tiny. 14t would be a 5.14 primary ratio. that is very good. 16t= 4.5:1 .
