a bigger pinion will put the motor farther off center making it more equal to the heavier battery weight on the other side.

how old is the motor?

Kind of a weak reason IMO. For a given spur, the difference in motor position between say 18T and 10T pinions is only 4mm, and that's quite a difference in tooth counts.

Like I said, it is also for efficiency reasons.

Now does anybody have a motor they would like to trade?
