Well, the 1527 is rated for right at 3hp cont, and 6 hp bursts. The common motor choice for the baja seems to be the 2215. It is rated at 3.3hp, but will have more torque than the 1527 due to the larger diameter rotor. Pretty close looking at the numbers, except the 200 dollar price difference (if both were purchased new).
Thinking about everything... If a 2215 2y on 8s (22k rpm) with a 16t pinion works well, a 1527 2y on 12s (28k rpm) with a 12t pinion should do fine. The higher motor speeds and lower gearing should make up for the drop in torque. Speed control choice may be limited a bit, but a CC hv110 is capable of around 5000 watt bursts so that should do it. Decent lipos would be a must, 5000mah 30c cells would do. One might get away with a pair of the zippy 5000 30c 6s packs, less than 250 for the lipos there.
So... 300 for the motor, 250 for the lipos, and 250 for the hv110 you would have the makings of a decent setup. Still 800 bucks worth of parts... Not sure if HC has any giant outrunners that would work... I will let you have a look and report back!
After doing all of that math and comparison, I can't help but think my dual 1521 setup may be a bit overpowered. I guess it will run cool, and hopefully the turnigy hv plane escs will be able to handle the load. I figured that one of them would not be enough, and considering the price of 2 was similar to the price of 1 hv110 I though it would be ok. Main reasoning was based on the fact I had the motors, and could not justify dropping 500 bucks for the 2215 when the complete baja cost me around 300 bucks. That and dual motor stuff always looks cool! Now that I have a 1527 2y I guess I could change my plans, but that motor is earmarked for the big savage...

Great info, I also saw a 5b running a 1915 on 9s, that thing was movin'! 52mph (radar gun)
but one would think that the 1915 would be too small of a motor for such a large car.

Yeah, 1800 watts cont... Does seems a bit low. I guess the larger diameter makes up for more torque.

One of Chip's friends traded me for a NIB high lift with a brushed speed control. I have seen them used for 350-400. Best to find them locally, some of the guys that race here used to have them... Then they all sold them of cheap.

likewise, i know too many people that have the mentality that all used stuff is crap and will break on you, its pretty simple to find good stuff- a little research is all that it takes.
Sometime in the near future i will be participating in an intership program at Lockheed Martin so I will have a good bit of cash- thinking about builing a bl 5b...
Where can you find mod1.5 pinion or gearstock.

I got the 12t pinions from sdp-si. They have a decent selection, I looked for 8mm poinions as the 1521 motors have 8mm shafts. 12 and 14t were the best bet given the motor kv and voltage that I planned to use. They have 16t and larger, but that was a bit much for my application. They were about 25 bucks each after shipping.

Hopefully cheaper... I will say that the ones I got are huge, must be almost 1.5" long. I will most likely have to trim them down, but the added length is handy as I can fine tune the motor position.

I already called dibs
We(myself and partner in crime Eovnu87435ds) both got selcted for the internship program due to our background in electrical systems. Pretty sure we get to work with the AEGIS system and the Radar testing equipment... Robotics does have its perks

I think the right motors for 1/5 scale are the big Neu 22xx, Plettenberg Bolido and the Lehner 36xx. I also think Astro Flight has some low Kv big inrunners too and when the appropriate ESC comes out they should be a good motor too (Actually they are really low Kv and might not work).
