sheesh... i must be finding all the mustang owners around where with deep pockets then.... lately it's been a handful of GT 500's. i see them pull up to the line and i just slowly creep away in my Z. a guy in our local group whipped the butt off a stock viper in his Z though.... but he has almost 700 hp... to the wheels.
sorry dicky - nice find! i know you modded your friends Z pretty extensively... i'll have to see what you think is the best bang for the buck mod. i have a plenum spacer, popcharger (CAI), and race pipes. what next? i'm thinking aftermarket exhaust... it's stock now, except for the race pipes. thoughts? PM me if you'd like.

While that 350 was quick, one has to realize that the Viper has 2 gears to ~100mph. The Z hits 100 about 2/3 of the way through 4th. So 3 and half gears you could say.
To 135 or so the Z has about 5 gears, the Viper has 3. You could see once the Z hit 6th and the Viper hit 4th, it quickly started running the Z down (but the race ended soon after).
Vipers are not particularly fast despite having mountain-moving torque and monstrous HP figures. The reason is that they are geared to the moon. I mean, they are still fast, but they lose a lot because the gearing is just so tall. So to 100mph, they aren't exactly blistering. But the point is that they do not slow down much. They pull hard all the way up to 175+

Yup! ^^^^
Vipers are also rough, clunky, handle for crap, loud, and just plain not fun to drive in anything but a short straight line. Not too mention they get hot as hell on the side exhaust models. For half the price of a viper there are several cars that will whip it's a$$ in every category.
I much prefer a cat that is nimble and and handle versus an all out torque machine. Going fast in a straight line is fun for about a minute.

Considering the weight of a Mustang and being 2wd it isn't hard to take off the line (especially considering how short 1st gear is). Up around 65 MPH the torque of the V8 really starts to shine but most redlight drag races are won or lost by the time you get moving that fast.
All I ever wanted was an honest weeks pay for an honest days work.

The problem with getting that much power out of an engine that small is you have to run huge cams with a freakin' ton of boost. I'd rather have the stroker engine with the twin turbos but more mild cams and turbos so it's more usable everyday (and you can get traction, rather than having to wait until 120+ to mat it). I agree with the last statement, every car has it's purpose and intended market and they can all put a smile on your face.

Does a Z really have that much torque up top? I drove an '04 and it was quick but I didn't realize that they had anything up top. I only had it up to about 65 but it was all in town so I couldn't really open it up much.

Still a lot of boost Very impressive that such a small engine can do that, but what kind of life can you expect out of the drivetrain?

That's still impressive for such a fairly cheap car. The dealer wanted $33k for the one I drove, and it had quite a few goodies on it. An STI or Evo is harder to get, costs more, and you get fewer goodies with them (and they don't look as good, IMO). Personally I prefer the looks of the 370 to the 350, the new one looks less bubbly.
