the better battery set-up?? - 05.14.2010, 11:27 AM

Hello, just wondering what would be better running 1 6s 5000 lipo battery, or two 3s 3000 lipo batteries. Pros and cons

Mike

ps. running neu 1521 with an RX8

1. 6s 5000 is a nice setup and will power the 1521 just fine as long as they are 25C or better packs.

2. two 3s 3000, I'm assuming they will be wired in a series? If so, they would need to be higher C rated to provide the amperage needed for the 1521 to run efficiently.

What C ratings are these packs?

(1)6s = high wattage needed, faster charging, big power supply, big charger, possible configs...6s only

(2)3s = lower wattage, slower charging, smaller power supply, smaller charger needed, possible configs.......3s 3000mah/3s 6000mah and 6s 3000

C rating is C rating no matter what the configuration.?

Do you run any 1/10 scale?

True but mah determines the available amperage the packs can supply.

With the Neu 1521 assuming its a 1Y or 1.5D, the Hyperion 5000, 6s, 35C pack will really shine and power this setup like it should. The 3000's would need to be configure in 6s would be less than required.

Only differance is going to be your run time due to the different mah ratings. Your power level will be identical (assuming same C rating on both scenarios).

Assuming both have reasonable C-rates, I personally would go for the 6s 5Ah option. 6s @ 5Ah is 111 watt-hours, and 6s @ 3Ah (or 3s at 6Ah) is 66.6 watt-hours. Clearly the 6s 5Ah option is better.

The only advantages to the smaller packs is reduced weight and flexibility to run 6s @ 3Ah or 3s @ 6Ah.

This is incorrect. The "C" in the c-rating stands for "capacity". a 35c 5000mah pack can discharge at 175amps continuously(35 times the 5k mah or 5amp/hour CAPACITY). A 35c 3000mah pack can only discharge at 105 amps continuously(35 times the 3kmah or 3 amp/hour CAPACITY). With equal "C-ratings", the higher capacity pack can provide more current and therefore more power.

Thanks for the correction. Now I gotta go make sure I've planned out my batteries correctly

I was just referring to my plan for the Flux. Since i extended it, I had been thinking about going to a single pack so that I only have one style of battery to worry about on all my trucks. I had shelved that idea after looking at the fairly low price on those new Hyperion and Neu 3S batteries. But they would have been a lower mAh rating than I have in my 5S and 6S packs (I think a 4K pack is about as thick as I can run in the Flux cases). Now, I will just order another 5S pack with the higher discharge, and try to mod up a single pack case between the rails.

Now that I think about it - I haven't ever run the Flux since I did all that work on it last fall......gotta get out and play!
