3" angle iron will work. 3/16" to 1/4" thick.
I'm still waiting on my 1717 to arrive to finish up my 2nd one.
Here's the first one I made out of some square tube metal. Ugly, but it works.

Thats pretty decent looking actually, just needs a bit of a sanding down the rough edges & a polish...
