Yea, you'd be suprised how fast that is, and how quick a BL setup like the 6s/mmm/2200 combo can get it there! So I tend to agree, get the MMM/2200/6s and go from there. You may only throw the big pinion on a few times and get bored with going around 100mph. And you can always sell or put the MMM combo in something else.
But the easiest way to run 8s is with a controller like the Castle MambaXL

Its a car controller, it has motor brakes, has a BEC, makes things simple. Only problem is its a bunch bigger than the MMM, and mounting 8s would generally mean 2 battery trays with 4s on each side, so theres that to figure out too.
The other option is air controllers like the Phoenix ICE HV line

These, like other air controllers, don't have a BEC (need an external one or a rx pack), doesn't have brakes (requiring mechanical brakes with a servo), and you need a Pistix adapter to use it with a typical pistol grip car controller. But you can run more voltage than the MambaXL
