I would use a 4s1p 5000mAh Lipo for a turboed street machine or 4s2p 10,000mAh for a high compression N/A strip weapon (I've started a neighbours deisel car on a 4s1p 5000mAh chinese LiPo) and secure them with bent alloy trays pop-riveted to the tub/spaceframe and held in with velcro straps, Even 2p should weigh under 1200 grams and cont under $500.

I've been thinking of a 4s4p A123 pack for my road car to dump some weight up front, it should be man enough to cope with what the alternator can chuck at it, its not a drag car so I wouldn't want to bother with taking it out and charging it externally to save a kilo and it would still be 10kilos lighter than stock.

Hot Bodies Lightning 2 Pro carbon, Mega 22/30/2, MMM, 4s3-5Ah.
Tamiya F201 carbon, Mamba 7700, MM, 2s A123 2.3ah.
Xray XT8, 1518, MMM, 4s5Ah.
Lots of boats.
