Really? I'm amazed that Tamiya are not way out in front of both if that is true. Round my way every (non-specialist) model shop has a dozen or more Tamiyas, but few have even a single Traxxas, I'd never even heard of them before I got on the internet. HPI are a little bigger over here, but are still nothing in comparison to Tamiya.

Every shop I know of has Tamiya on the walls, but rarely sells them. They sell way more Traxxas and HPI product than anything else. Go to any bash session and you'll see HPI and Traxxas all over the place.
