Its not technically needed, but it will help add strength & protect against scratches. You will require a tape measure, cordless drill, 3mm drill bit, and some voodoo magic to mount it- the holes at one end will line up, but you will need to drill 2 new holes at the other end (if the plate is long enough) that line up with the holes on the chassis, then just use some slightly longer countersunk screws to bolt it to the chassis (counter sink the new holes with a larger drill bit- dont go in too deep though).
