Part of it depends on what type of fan you are trying to mount. I've used a 40mm 12V fan and used alu standoffs to mount the fan over the ESC, and I've also used a 25mm 5V fan I bolted directly to the ESC. The latter one I used a tap to create the (3mm) threads first, then it threads in nicely, works well, and has a compact footprint. Also runs off BEC power, so isn't too harsh on the fan.

For the 12V fan I tapped right off the batt inputs. Severly overvolted, but moves lots of air. :)
