Sorry but you're not right my friend, the 16018 is rated for 6s li-po or 18 cells ni-mh.
18 cells ni-mh = 21.6V
6s li-po = 22.2

The 16018 can support 25V.

So i was not running over limits

I've un-plug the li-po to save it from the fire.

The negatif input lead have boke inside of the board and short on the input capacitor.

I hope that my 2 li-po pack are correct, i've not try to recharge it.

So i nead a new controller. Maybe a MMM or another MGM i don't know.
David,

Forget the MGM!!! Cut your losses and go with the MMM.

I had exactly what David and yourself have explained happen to me. Sad thing is when I sent the unit back to MGM for a warranty repair I was slugged with a $120 (AU) repair bill . I will be selling my MGM when it gets back and getting a MMM as soon as Mike has them readily available.

Cheers Andrew

This may not have been your problem but I wouldn't rule it out.
the "18" number isnt the amount of voltage it can take but the number of NiMh cells it can handle....so the voltage was fine

I do like to make mounts that have foam and/or female velcro to help absorb the shock

This is possible with what some of you off-road guys get up to . But I run mine in THIS
and I only run it on a purpose built track. The strange thing in common about these MGM failures is the fact that they run fine one day then let the smoke out the next . In my instance I had driven the car the day before (temps all good) then the next day I had the car on the bench about to have a drive. Plug in the battery (deans plugs) and POOOOF!!! the dreaded white smoke .

Tick tick tick tick tick tick tick.........

On mine, there was not only smoke, but alot of fire
The negative bare were the black batterie lead connect on have literaly disconect from the 4 PCB and short with one of the capacitor.

The only thing i'am little scared, is my li-po pack. Don't know if the pack is fine after this happen.
I've recharge them, both pack seem to have all the cells at the same voltage, but i've a pack with an internal resistance of 36mohms and other one with 68mohms.
This is 2 identical pack (TP V2 extreme 5000mAh, 3s) and have always been use in same time.......

My mistake s I apologise, I'm sure it won't make any difference in that case but as MGM have a 16025 listed I went with that instead of the 16018, it'll probably still go up in smoke at some point!

Losi 8T RR - Novarossi Plus 21-5BT/ Jammin JP3 - Teknorc 8T - Neu 1515-1Y - MGM 16025-3 Z Series ESC.

David, I'm sorry for your loss.

MGMs are very robust controllers, as I'm sure most of us know, however they aren't perfect and (unfortunately) still fail once in a while. My 16016 has been serving me well for the last 3 years. Even with the 2.32 firmware (I don't use reverse).

Hi David - can you please describe what method you used to measure the internal resistance of your cells? I'm curious to know what you used for the shunt - i've been trying to figure out a good shunt for lipos in order to really give them a workout on the bench.

Thanks!

I think David would be taking the reading from his charger. Some of the better chargers now days will give you a read out of resistance etc.
Correct me if I'm wrong David.

Cheers Andrew

I got my MGM 16024-3 fan cooled from Mike not long ago, hooked it up and sparks+smokes. Undid the battery as quick as I can. removed the fans and found one of the screws for the fans had a burnt tip. Left the fans out, hooked up the battery again, no sparks or smoke, able to programme it with the USBCOM++, ran my HV4400 motor freely (not installed to truck) A123 4S1P battery. Bolts everything into the truck, hooked up again, and much more sparks and smoke. MGM 16024 now on its way back to Czech Republic.

Welcome in my MGM jungle.
For me, i Never spend $300.00 again on a supposely High End controller. I have order an MMM and if this MMM died, so i am sure that i will have a fast support from Castle. It is not the same thing for MGM, the delay to have a response to the email is very long, and the delay to ship it oversea is realy too long.
