Castle Creations 2400kv 4-pole with Sidewinder SCT? NO. - 09.02.2011, 02:38 PM

Why: I am cheap, the Max Pro costs a lot and you can get the Sidewinder SCT for as little as $40 these days. I tried to setup my Slash 4x4 with Castle 1415 2400kv 4-pole motor with a Sidewinder SCT ESC. I had read on other forums from Castle Employees that the newer SCT/SV2 sidewinders were close to the original Mamba Max in power handling. I thought with a few small tricks, I could get it to run the 1415 reliably. Here are the mods:
  • Hextronic UBEC
  • Speed Passion 20mm fan
  • LRP external capacitor
I was running with stock wheels and tires and used a 15 tooth pinion and 54 tooth spur running a Zippy 3s Lipo.

Result: Top speed was 33.8mph by GPS. Heat was not an issue, however hesitation was a HUGE issue. It was inconsistent as well, sometimes chugging for 10-15 feet before catching and going. I tried to adjust the punch control and timing to different settings with no success.

Bottom line, don't try it. I have used the SCT in my CRT.5 with a Tacon 2-pole 3660 2700kv motor and it works fine. I thought I could get it to work with the Castle motor. Guess not.
