E-Slayer conversion please help with some questions

Ok so im converting my slayer to vxl brushless I will be running a maxamps 3s lipo, I would like to know if there is a way to get rid of the mechanical brakes, and use the motor brake I also want to keep it 2 speed. Also what gearing would you suggest. I would also like to get rid of the clutch bell and run it direct with a longer pinion. Thanks

First of all, 3s is a bit too low voltage IMO. Even with the two speed, I would shoot for 4s minimum.

But anyway; there is no way to use motor brakes and/or have reverse while retaining the autoshifting two-speed... at least not without pretty much designing a tranny from scratch.

This thread in the Revo section should help you see why this is so. The slayer tranny is close enough to a Revo that the differences are very minor.

I see I wasent wanting reverse though. Guess Im stuck with mechanical breaks. Im trying to lighten it up as much as possible, I just bought a vantage carbon chassis yesterday to.

honestly, a VXL does not have enough power to push a slayer. a medusa 70mm 2000kv with a MMM on 4s-6s is the cheapest setup and has awesome temps and power, you get what you pay for. i would also not recommend purchasing maxamp as many believe they are overated and data supports this. try a couple 30c flightmax zippys http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...1&ParentCat=85

I have had real good luck with maxamps so far plus they are only 20 minutes from my house and if you pick up the lipo directly from them you get 25% off. I want to try the vxl first if it sucks I will upgrade.

As far as that motor on 3s you may want to keep the 2 speed and mech brakes as they will help take some load off the motor.

Now if you want to go with motor brakes you have to lock the tranny in 2nd gear (or 1st). There is a sticky in the revo section by BrianG about how to do this.

As far as loosing the clutch, buy the rcm revo mount. It places the motor closer to the spur so that you can use std pinions. You may also want to run jato spurs, as they are 32p and you can get 32p pinions from traxxas or rrp with 1/8 bore to match the 1/8 shaft on the vxl motor. I would say that 18/54 gearing would be a good place to start, mid 30s with stock sized tires.

You really want to keep this truck as light as possible with that power system. Heavy wheels and tall gearing will produce alot of heat in the motor, esc and batts.

Cool thanks for the info, do you think a long shank pinion would work it dosent seem to far off?

What motor mount are you planning to run? The tekno mount? It will require long shank pinions, but most of those are 5mm bore, so you will need a bore reducer from 5mm to 1/8" to fit the vxl shaft.

If you keep it light you can still lock the tranny in 2nd gear and use motor brakes, just set the vxl for forward only (it has that option IIRC) if you do not want reverse.

Ya I have the tekno kit already, I also have the bore reducer already, I was looking at the novak long shanks.

Looks like you are on the right track. You can also use some spacers, maybe 5-6mm thick, to space the front of the motor mount plate towards the spur. That way you can run std length pinions and not place so much load on the motor's front bearing.
