I was thinking a similar idea, just inside the tranny. The gear set would have to be mored to the rear, to facilitate room to place the disconncetor for the front drive. My only issue with that is that the front diff will be rotating the entire time, connected or not to the tranny. Some sort of disconnect at the wheel hub would be good as well, but would be a bit too much on a rc vehicle. I may disassemble the emaxx tranny and see if this would be feasable.
