MM ESC and voltage + other questions :D - 03.30.2008, 11:10 AM

Hi guys,

I'm sure these questions have been asked and answered a few times before, but I can't seem to find definitive answers so I'm just going to ask them all in once place :D

I'm in the process of gathering bits and pieces together to convert my Revo to brushless.

With regard to the Mamba Max ESC, what sort of voltages can I run without frying it? I was considering a 5S A123 pack with a 7XL motor, but if the voltage is too high, I guess I'd have to go down to a 4S pack.

I've seen a lot of comments about adding more or better "caps" which I assume are capacitors? If so, which ones (or what rating) should I get, and how does one attach them? Do I replace the ones on the ESC, or add them somewhere else?

I will be running an external BEC also, but is there a rule of thumb to follow here, ie anything over 3S you need a BEC for?

I've also seen the big MMM thread. The MMM stands for Monster Mamba Max? What are the specs for this beast and have there been any updates on the availability of it?

thanks again guys :D

On the Mamba Max the maximum voltage that I would recommend would be 4s Lipo or 5s A123. The only way to run this high of a voltage without overheating is to use an external BEC and possibly a fan. 5s Lipo or 6s A123 would most likely overheat the Mamba Max even with an external BEC.

The addon capacitors aren't necessarily needed but they help reduce the heat of the ESC a lot. GriffinRU is the guy on this forum that mods the MM for a fee if you PM him. Otherwise you could try to do the mods yourself using GriffinRU's website as a guide which has links to the caps that are needed: http://forum.rcdesign.ru/index.php?a...showentry=4093

The MMM is supposed to be way better in terms of heat and can handle up to 6s Lipo. It is also rated somewhere around 200amps whereas the MM is rated around 110amps. Along with those improvements it includes the castle creation switching BEC built in so there is no need for an external one. The release date is not known and it may not be for another couple of months. It is expected to be around $200 for the esc but eventually it will be able to be purchased as a kit with a Steve Neu design motor similar to the Neu 1515/1y for around $300 for both.

if you wanted to run a MM esc in a Revo you could pair it up with a Neu 1515/1y , a GOOD 4cell lipo and have a pretty decent setup.

Thats what I have on my Revo with a TrueRC 4s 8000mah lipo and it is definitely an awesome setup! I was running a Feigao 8XL but it would heat up real quick and the Neu seems to run smoother than the Feigao with the new MM firmware.

its good you are happy with the True Rc cells, trying

a pack with Enerland cells will give you a noticable improvement

To do the cap mod. you need 4 of these (cause 4 smaller ones are better then one big one)
http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...me=493-1866-ND
35v 330uf, low ESR.

then you solder them so all the negatives go to the black wire, and positive to the red wire.

Thanks to metal man for describing this al to me:
