MMM v3 combo or MMM v3 + Neu motor? - 10.29.2008, 11:45 PM

Castle Creations offers on their website a Neu motor, specifically a 1515/1Y finned can for $265 USD. It is rated at 2200 kV. Link: 1515/1Y

Also on their website they offer a MMM v3 combo with a 2200 kV motor, which is called a "Neu Castle motor" with "up to 85% efficiency." Link:
MMM combo

Purchasing the MMM combo costs $349 and includes a Castle link USB adapter. Purchasing the MMM and the Neu motor finned costs $489 (with the Castle USB adapter) and the motor is custom made to order with 4-8 week delivery time. In a post in another forum, the Neu Castle motor is referred as a knock off Neu motor.

If converting to brushless, is the MMM + Neu motor of MMM combo, is the Neu motor worth the extra $150?

Either setup will give great results i'm sure, I'm completely satisfied and blown away with the performance of my Tekno-Nue 1515/1y on 4s with the MMM. The CC-Nue from what i have heard and seen on this forum is nearly the same minus a few changes (sealed can, non carbon wrapped rotor, and larger bearings i think are the main changes to the CC-Nue). besides this they are made in China where Nue/teckno-Nue's are made in the States. As far as performance goes i'm not sure if you will notice the difference between the two, so an additional $150 might not be worth it, but seeing as though i have never seen the CC-Nue in action i cant really say.

Hopefully i didnt forget anything, and if i did someone will chime in!

Because the Castle Creations Neu motors aren't in production yet, and no customers have tried them out yet, we can only speculate at how they will compare to the real Neu motors. We will have to wait and see now...

Edit: shizzon beat me too it... and with a much more in depth answer as well.

I pondered the same question after reading about the performance of the "CastleNeu" from Brushlessboy. It came down to application, I'm running 6s in my conversions so I wanted something in the 1600-1700kv range and just went ahead and purchased a 1515 2.5d Neu. If castle makes the same wind in the future I'll grab one as well.

Castle licensed the design of the neu 15 series motors, so I think the castle neu motors will be very comparable to to regular neu motors performance wise. From reading all the posts by Patrick on the Castle Creations section of these forums, it seems that castle has done their homework in choosing the best design for big scale vehicles. I myself am waiting on the 2650kv version, and will not buy regular neu motor due to cost, open vents and leads that can't (shouldn't) be bent.

just go pick up one the new badass, hand-built TEkno Neu, square canned motors on sale now at impaktrc for $209 and then get the V3 MMM there also for $169. you'll be out $380 and have a guaranteed sweet setup. i have a couple of these setups and just bought another one for the Mugen mbx5t. you cant go wrong with impaktrc. my truggy does 60mph.
if the MMMs are out of stock at impakt wait a week and they should be avail again. good luck. here is the link to the page with the Neu motors for sale.

Arct1k had a couple of the cc/neu motors and was happy with their performance, get ahold of him for more specifics. I went with a Tekno Neu 1515 2.5d and a MMM. Originally wanted a Tekno 1515 1Y but they where out and I wanted to run my REVO. After some pondering and asking on here I decided I would run the 2.5d on 4s and see what happens. On 4s the motor did ok, honestly not a bad racing setup for MT, would gear up to high 30's and keep things cool, except my MA packs. Now that I have a 6s setup and geared it appropriatelly it's crazy!!! Also everything stays cool, including my neuenergy lipos, The fan on the MMM didn't kick in, I could hold onto the motor indefinetlly, and the Lipos where at 95*, didn't get to temp everything, just the lipos.

Basically it's your call! If you want to wait till CC releases the combos I'm sure they'll be great. I personally wouldn't run the 1y(2200kv combo) on anything over 4s though, they say you can run 6s. If you want more than 4s and cool temps your going to have to go to with a different motor, a genuine Neu, Medusa, or similar.

i run the 1515 1.5D 2700kv on 5s and my motor never gets above 120*. this is with a fan mounted on the Tekno motor mount though. i have seen many in this forum run the 2700kv on 6s without any troubles either. so you could definitely go more than 4s on the 2200kv.

Just my opinion! Also what is the sense in spending $260+ for a high efficiency neu and then slap a fan on it? IMHO if a Neu needs a fan on it....you need a bigger Neu for the job. That brings me to the next point. Running a 2700kv or 2200kv on 6s in a buggy is a lot different than in a truggy or MT

I ran a 1515 1.5d in my erevo racing truggies on a 4s system nearly all summer w/o any fans and no heat issues. It is more than enough ANY truggy or similar sized MT and w/o a fan.

U said it yourself here though, 4s! I'm sure they do well on 4s, lots of power and cool temps. But on 6s I bet things get a bit warm, maybe not hot but warmer.

Revonut,
you said it best..."just my opinion" thats all it is from my end too. not criticism. besides, the fan is for precuation, not necessity. and i run the 1512 1.5D 3300kv on 4s and 5s (1512 1.5D on 4s/5s in losi buggy and the 1515 1.5D with 5s/6s in truggy) without any issues. fan or not. just stating the facts according to my experience to help the guy that started this thread....not to argue with you.

current proseries rules state MT's max voltage is 4s, I'm not sure if they will be changing it for 2009 or not.. I emailed and got no reply. I'm also wondering how they will handle hte arena truck class w/ brushless hitting like a tornado... they will need to adapt quickly. I'm guess at least 5s maybe 6s max though... and min weights and have to simulate pit stops or just 1 long one to swap packs.
